The Most Eco-Sustainable Yoga Mat on the Planet!
Yogasana makes the world’s most eco-friendly yoga mats. We believe that the practice of yoga and eco-sustainability go hand-in-hand. Our mats are handmade by men and women at our production facility near Varanasi, India.
- We use locally grown cotton – We get to personally know the farmers who provide the raw material
- We use of non-toxic dyes – All residual dye water is treated and used to irrigate groves of local mango trees.
- The touch of a hand – Every step of our manufacturing process uses handmade techniques.
- No child labor is used to make our mats – We pay our workers more than the prevailing wage and provide healthcare for their families.
- Sustainability – We are a founding member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council
Yogasana mats are guaranteed for 15 years.
Our 100% cotton yoga mats are designed to last a lifetime. After years of service they can be used as an attractive runner in your home, meaning they’ll never end up in a landfill.
Yogasana Mats vs. other “eco-friendly” yoga mats.
The problem with most eco- yoga mats is that they eventually end up in landfills. These mats are made of biodegradable synthetic compounds like TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) and PER (polymer environmental resin). While these mats don’t contain the harsh chemicals used in PVC yoga mats, their eco-attributes come at the expense of their longevity. These mats are designed to bio-degrade in landfills, and can’t be used outdoors for extended periods of time.
Natural rubber yoga mats
Some mats are made of natural rubber. These mats can have an open-cell or closed-cell construction. Open-cell mats have the advantage of absorbing sweat and body oils which can make them less slippery, but they are difficult to clean. Closed-cell mats don’t absorb sweat, so moisture tends to stay on the top layer making it more slippery when wet. Rubber mats should not be used outdoors for extended periods of time because it shortens their lifespan. Some yogis also object to the smell of rubber.
Eco-friendly PVC yoga mats?
There are PVC mats that are certified by OEKO-Tex, a European agency that tests products for harmful substances. There is technology to make PVC yoga mats in a way to satisfy OEKO-Tex certification requirements. But the simple fact is that PVC is not biodegradable. The only way to dispose of polyvinyl chloride is to burn it – and this is toxic to the environment.
The Yogasana Circle represents our effort to give back. Part of the proceeds from the sale of each mat is used to support the education of the children of the production workers. If you decide to make an additional contribution – 100% of your donation will go towards this cause.
The Circle is complete – The Karma is good!
